CSPS Newsletter 19/5/2023
Principal’s Message
Dear Families,
Can you believe we are already 4 weeks into Term 2! The weather has certainly taken a turn as we move through Autumn and towards Winter. A reminder to please make sure your children have warm uniform items to wear every day and please make sure jumpers and jackets are named!
Debating
Last week was the first round of Interschool Debating for 2023. Our 4 teams of Year 5 and Year 6 students worked hard to prepare and practise their affirmative or negative speeches for the topic ‘A stadium should be built at Macquarie Point.’ On the day at Princes Street Primary School, students were a little nervous and showed great courage in standing up before a room full of people, including the adjudicator, and presenting their speeches. I had the great pleasure of watching 2 of the debates and I was excited and proud to see and hear the efforts of the students come to life. All teams put in magnificent performances. Students are now busy preparing for their second debate which will be held at Taroona Primary School on 29th May. The topic for the second debate is ‘Australia should have a new national flag.’
Cross Country
As we go to press, our 2023 CSPS Cross Country Carnival is underway. I look forward to sharing news and photos about this event in next fortnight’s newsletter.
Yep!
The Commissioner for Children and Young People is excited to announce that our YEP! program was officially launched on 9 May 2023. Your Engagement Place (YEP!) is a place where children and young people under the age of 18 can find ways to engage with CCYP and other organisations around Tasmania to have a voice on things that matter to them. Any child and young person aged under 18 who registers before 9 June enters the membership draw for a chance to win an iPad. Children and young people can register here. T&Cs apply.
You can check out our YEP! hub now by visiting our new CCYP website. If you are an adult and would like to keep up to date with current engagement opportunities available to children and young people in Tasmania, fill out our adult subscription form.
Should you have any questions at all about the new program or wish to promote an ethical engagement opportunity open to young Tasmanians, please do not hesitate to email us at childcomm@childcomm.tas.gov.au or call us on (03) 6166 1366

National Volunteer Week
This week we celebrate National Volunteer Week. We are incredibly grateful to all of our wonderful volunteers for the work you do in supporting our students. The list of volunteer roles at CSPS is long - School Association, Snack Shack, Soccer organisation, support and the Soccer Shack, Book Club, classroom assistance, excursion support, covering Library books, support for special events eg. the Quiz Night, helping at Sports Carnivals and Music events, Bush Connections and more! The theme for this year’s National Volunteers Week is ‘The Change Makers.’ Our volunteers certainly change the life of our students in many, many positive ways. National Volunteer Week is a chance for all of us to celebrate and recognise the vital work of volunteers and to say thank you! Every small job is a great help - please consider helping out, even if it’s just once a year.

Education Support Personnel
This week we have also celebrated ‘Education Support Personnel Day,’
This is a day to celebrate and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all the support staff in our education system who provide essential services to our students and teachers.
Our ESP members are the unsung heroes of our schools and colleges - from the teacher assistants who show support daily, the administration staff who multitask like nobody's business, the library and lab technicians who are always on deck to lend a helping hand, and the countless other roles that keep our schools and colleges running smoothly.
Thank you to our team!!
Safeguarding in Schools
Safeguarding the rights of children and young people to have an education, to be heard, and to be kept safe from harm is a priority for the Department as we strive to ensure all Tasmanian children and young people are known, safe, well and learning. Please have a look here at our commitment.

Finally this week, a reminder to parents and carers, if you have any concerns please do make an appointment to speak with me at school. Issues can sometimes grow out of proportion due to “word of mouth” miscommunications. It is much better to clear up any misunderstandings with an in-person conversation. It’s also a chance to share great learning stories and celebrate achievements!

Class News
Welcome to 5/6 Isaac’s first Newsletter entry for the year.
From Ms Isaac
Term 1 was a very busy term getting to know each other and establishing class routines. In English our writing focus was narrative text. In Mathematics we began a yearlong adventure in deepening our understanding of number especially multiplication, fractions, and decimals and how these concepts are integral to all other areas of Mathematics. We finished the term with an excursion to the Rote Greber Telescope Museum which was a very interesting experience. We managed to outwit the clouds and look at the sun through a telescope. Term 2 had a busy start with Bush Connections where we began to explore the curriculum area of HaSS. Our focus literacy text is persuasive language. Many students are also involved in debating which will support this focus. In Maths we will be exploring perimeter and area as well as continuing with our number focus of fraction decimals and multiplication.

In class we have been doing Science and in Science we have been looking at how light travels in a straight line. We had to partner up and make something that proves that light travels in a straight line. We went to Grote Reber’s Museum and learned about the sun and all the other planets. We also got to see a model of Grote Reber’s office where he made inventions. It was so great that we got that experience.

Physical Education
It has been a very busy Term and a half in PE with Athletics taking up a fair chunk of Term 1. In the second half of the term K-2 had a focus on motor skills and catching/throwing. Grade 3-6 students worked on developing game skills and understanding of rules in basketball and netball. Term 2 has been just as busy with a major focus being getting ready for our Cross Country Carnival. All classes have taken part in practice runs around the track with a focus on fitness and doing their best. On nice days we have been able to run the track to build up our confidence in running the full distance and on wet weather days we have still been very active, taking part in group running tests and fitness circuits. Following cross country, Grade 3-6 will be participating in an orienteering unit to make the most of our fitness work and K-2 will be developing their understanding of teamwork and rules in some game opportunities.

Enrollment for Kindergarten 2024

School Association

Each year the School Associations help fund items for the school community, like the picnic tables, home reading books, junior novels, the Growing Up program, Prep-2 Water Orientation and more.
This year the school will need to replace many IT devices and will be seeking a contribution from the Association. To ensure we can help with this and our other normal yearly contributions, we are looking for some more parent help to volunteer with some fundraising activities. Some of the suggestions so far are (but we are not limited to these):
- Snack Shack with themed days (like our pizza day);
- Soccer Shack co-ordinator and volunteer (run on Saturdays during soccer season, but proceeds go to all students;
- Art Exhibition with food offering;
- Quiz Night;
- Movie Night;
- Market/Mini fair;
- Cake stall / Colour Run.
So why not grab a couple of parents and help us organise an event. It only takes parents to volunteer for one thing a year to raise funds to help our children. So please send an email to cspsa.treasurer@gmail.com or drop us a line on the School Association Facebook page (Campbell Street Primary School Association).
Everything helps with our children’s education.
