Principal's News
Dear families,
It’s the end of a whirlwind Term 2 at Campbell Street Primary School and I wanted to take the chance to repeat my message of gratitude to the entire school community for making me so welcome since I started in late-April.
Looking forward to Term 3, I’m excited to be returning and will look forward to supporting students and staff to make every school day matter by promoting high expectations in teaching and learning while supporting student wellbeing.
As well as reflecting on some of the fun excursions and extra-curricular activities such as cross country and our Young Archies exhibition, it’s also a good time to consider the academic growth students continue to demonstrate at Campbell Street.
Recent NAPLAN results show the proportion of our Year 3 and Year 5 students rated as ‘strong’ or ‘exceeding’ for Reading is above that in similar schools and well above State and national averages.
This is a positive indicator that the journey we’re on in Lifting Literacy is already having an impact.
Similarly in Numeracy, both Year 3 and Year 5 student cohorts are exceeding the State average in the ‘strong’ and ‘exceeding’ categories.
We also know that 44% of our Year 5 students demonstrated high growth in spelling from Year 3 to Year 5, indicating that teacher practice has been highly effective in supporting student spelling.
Early next term our staff will consider the full range of NAPLAN data alongside other assessments and screening data to better understand areas where teaching practice has been effective as well as identifying areas to ‘bump-up’ student outcomes that may be trending down over time.
Staff changes
We wish Mrs Jess Wishart all the best as she commences maternity leave at the end of term. Mrs Sarah Beechey will take over from Jess as the classroom teacher with our Prep students and we’re happy to welcome Sarah back after she spent the first four weeks this term covering our Prep/1 class.
Our Kindergarten teacher, Mrs Caitlin Ferguson, will be taking long-service leave during the first half of Term 3. Her absence will be covered by our LiL co-ordinator, Mrs Eleanor Tong Lee, and Miss Rose Bain, who has recently completed her teaching placement with the kinder class.
Mrs Emily Leaman will also be away on leave during the first three weeks of term and Mrs Brooke Innis will be back-filling Emily’s AST days (Monday and Tuesday). Mrs Michelle Isaac will take Brooke’s classroom days to provide consistency and familiarity for the 5/6A class during this period.
Term 3 Assemblies
I have been considering the potential to shift assemblies from Tuesdays to Thursdays next term in order to avoid any clashes with music lessons (which are timetabled in the hall every Tuesday and Wednesday).
Unfortunately that won’t be possible due to a number of other bookings already in place for Thursdays, including class excursions, school swimming carnival etc.
It may still be possible to launch Thursday assemblies during Term 4, and I will confirm any decision ASAP to give people the best chance possible to arrange work and other commitments to attend.
Also - following a limited trial during our last assembly, I am planning to proceed with ‘streaming’ assemblies via the Teams platform.
A private link to join will be sent to families via Seesaw and the system will be set to stop any recording, use of cameras or microphones by anyone joining the Teams call.
Quiz Night
Among the School Association events and fundraisers planned for Term 3, the Quiz Night on Saturday, August 30th looks like being a highlight.
Please save the date if you haven’t already and get your team organised!
School uniform, hoods etc.
With the colder weather, I understand that students may be wearing additional layers to school to stay warm throughout the day.
Where possible, additional layers or items of clothing should be navy blue in keeping with the school uniform, but I understand that won’t always be possible.
Items with hoods are ok to wear at school, but students will be asked to not have ‘hoods up’ in the classroom, around the school or playground (this includes the Year 6 jumpers).
Have a happy and safe school holidays
See you next term!
Class News
Festival of Voices, Young Tasmania Sings
Congratulations to our choir who represented our school so well in Young Tasmania Sings, as part of Festival of Voices this week. The project culminated in an evening concert on Tuesday 1st July at Hobart City Hall. The massed choir included students from numerous schools around Tasmania and was conducted by Annie Kwok from Adelaide. We were very proud of Ellis who was one of the two student MC’s for this concert. It was an exciting event to be part of.
Year 3-6 Art
Grades 3-6 have been focusing on the work of Australian artist Casey Manson (aka Grotti Lotti) she is based in Hamilton, Victoria-Gunditjmara. She is inspired by the surrounding mountains, blooms, wildlife, beaches and magic landscapes. While looking at samples of her art we then focused on Australian birdlife to build our pieces of art.
We focused on, making our pictures large and detailed. Starting with a base colour using watercolour paints, added a little more detail with paints in the second layer and then used marker pens to add those final bits of detail.
Assembly Certificates
Congratulations to all students from Kinder to Year 6 that received Certificates for Growth at Assembly on Tuesday 24th of June.

The School Association would like to thank everyone for the contributions to our fundraising in Term 2.
It was a big term with two Snack Shacks, eight weekend sausage sizzle fundraisers, icy poles on cross country day and a donut drive.
Term 3 has lots more fun and exciting things on the go including (but not limited to):
- Snack shacks – Thursday 7th August and 25th September
- School Association meetings – Tuesday 29th July and 9th September at 6pm
- Saturday sausage sizzles – from 8am-1pm at the school until end of August
- Quiz night – Saturday 30th August
- Bunnings Glenorchy BBQ fundraiser – Saturday 13th September
We are always on the lookout for volunteers, so please reach out if you can help with any of the fundraising items mentioned above. Without your help these events may not go ahead.
The association has been working away gaining donations towards our quiz night and end of year raffle but there is always time to let us know of a business to contact or if you know who can donate to help raise funds for the children!
Soccer Shack building upgrade – As one of our major fundraisers, we would like to give the Soccer Shack a little upgrade.
We are still looking at sourcing an industrial/outdoor shelving unit and installation and some white house paint.
If you can donate your skills/labour or materials, please let us know at cspsasecretary@gmail.com
Have a safe school holiday.
